.au Contested Domain Names

There are 6,192 contested .au domain names left with just over 13,000 applicants hoping to secure their .au rights. Based on our calculations the 13,000 number is actually larger as the applications made by multiple Government departments are being treated as 1 claim. You can read about how the Government wasted tax payer funds making multiple department applications for the same .au domain at the detriment of actual domain users who should have not been blocked by various government departments that did not even make an application directly as done on their behalf.

At 31 March 2023 direct registrations of .au hit 747,968, and .com.au hit 3,133,853. That means that .au registrations now account for 23.87% of .com.au domains registered.

Also interesting to check is the over all growth of each name space for March 2023:
.au 10,713 growth
.com.au 5,245 growth

.au growth is double that of .com.au domains in March.

Creates in the space however do show a different picture:
.au 11,083 new domains created
.com.au 41,536 new domains created

This shows that .com.au is the more sought after extension, however the growth number is impacted by domain names not renewed/expired as many old users are not renewing their .com.au domain names.
