The internet has grown by 4.5 million domain name registrations in the first quarter of 2020.
VeriSign announced 366.8 million domain name registrations for the first quarter of 2020 across all top-level domains (TLDs). This is a 1.2 percent increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.
Each year domain name registrations have grown by 4.2 percent, or about 14.9 million.
The ‘.net’ and ‘.com’ TLD domain name registrations are combined to a total of 160.7 million in domain name base at the end of 2020. This is an increase of 1.1 percent, or 1.8 million domain names compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.
New domain name registrations have increased from 9.8 million at the end of the fourth quarter of 2019 to 10 million at the end of the first quarter of 2020.
Each year the ‘.net’ and ‘.com’ domain names combined have had a 3.8 percent, or 5.9 million increase in domain name registrations. The bulk of these registrations are .com with 147.3 million with .net having just 13.4 million domain name registrations.
