Domainer Show – Episode 17 with Ron Jackson from DNJournal.com

Rob and Ed were lucky enough to spend some time with Ron Jackson who’s been running the legendary domain name bible DNJournal.com since 2003!

Anything and everything that’s mattered in the domain name industry across the world since 2003 has appeared on Ron’s website so we figured it was time to get a run down on some highlights of the past 16 years plus what’s coming up in the future.

Ron runs DNJournal.com
Robert runs Registry Australia and DBR.com.au
Ed runs OnlineImpact.com.au

Rick Schwartz hasn’t been right since the get go!

He bought flowers.mobi for $200,000 and it later sold for $6,500 – that’s quite a haircut. He also bought 2,000 .co’s. What was he thinking? There are other comments out there in interviews where he looks like a fan of new gTLDs… and at some point he did a 180.

      Hi Dan, appreciate your opinion…

… but, I don’t think any entrepreneur or domain investor has been right since the “get-go”. Trial and error is the best way to find your own personal path to success and I’m guessing this is how Rick Schwartz became successful in his own way.

Look at the cryptocurrency market, no one knows which way it’s going to go, but if you don’t try…

Rick is a risk taker. But you miss the point. He will sell his assets at a major loss to lower or avoid paying capital gains on a big sale.

This is a silly comment. Rick’s position has always been clear as shown in these videos:

      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uYug6bPnDHU

      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=izsxteuqhv8

Rick has been proven right and Frank has made a motza convincing others that new TLDs will succeed, though in my opinion they have not.

.us failed, .uk failed, .nz failed and .au will fail.

Loved this! Thank you. I’ve got about 200 domains that I’ve had for decades that I think are good. I am pretty sure it’s good I hung onto them, especially after listening to your show.

    Great interview guys!

Salient points made by Ron (53 mins onwards):

“…there have been bigger sales than that [Voice.com, US$30 million] but what we can only charter are the publicly reported ones. I know from speaking with people in the industry that the vast majority of the high-end sales are subject to non-disclosure agreements, so I’m sure there were multiple sales bigger than the $13 million for Sex.com over the years…”

“it’s a unique asset, if the seller doesn’t want to sell and you really want it, you either pay up or you don’t get it”

[quoting Michael Costello who sold Whisky.com for US$3.1 million and refused buyer demands for a non-disclosure agreement] “those sales figures are so important to show the rest of the world the value of these assets… if I let them tell me that I can’t put that out there I’m devaluing all of my other assets”

Ron: “in the long run he felt the value of putting that out there would help his entire portfolio so he was adamant on that point… he needs the whole industry to do well for him to do well”

Pat on the back to those who have announced a few sales recently, but a lot more sales need to be published.
