We can learn a lot from looking at the numbers of international domain names sold in 2019. Reported sales by extension shows some major trends in 2019 as compared to 2018. And these trends are likely to continue into 2020 and beyond.
First off, .com was far and away the leader of domain sales with 92,744 “known” sales in 2019 as compared to 69,906 “known” sales in 2018. This is a 25% increase in sales between 2018 and 2019.
But things get really interesting when we look at the number of sales of other domain extensions during that same period.
The second most frequently purchased domain extension was .net with 2,823 “known” sales in 2019 versus 2,430 in 2018 which is a 14% increase.
The .org extension, the subject of much scrutiny with its recent sale, saw a nearly 20% increase with 5,252 sales in 2019 as compared to 4,325 in 2018.
The .info domain extension sold just 312 in 2019, an 18% increase over 2018 when there were 256 sales.
The .io domain showed a nearly 10% drop in sales in 2019 (838) compared to 2018 (915).
From there the remaining top domain extension sales combined didn’t even get close to the number of domains sold in the .com extension.
