Whilst my son Luke has taken control of Domain Syndicates and eTrading (and doing a fine job selling down the portfolio), I’ve started having a bit of a dabble again in the .au space.
Obviously, when I was briefly a registrar, I couldn’t register domain names unless they were for the actual registrar businesses. But now that I’m free, there’s nothing stopping me!
Last year I was offered two particular domain names by an overseas broker. These were Genius.com.au and Eagle.com.au. The prices were a bit rich for me back then, so I declined.
However, I revisited these last week, and we came to a mutually agreeable arrangement. The deal was done by escrow, and they are now in the name of my new entity VPE Pty Ltd.
I reckon these are cracker domain names – what do you think?

Who are you going to sell them to?
No one in mind young David.
Got some ideas for the development of Genius.com.au; and have just applied for a TM yesterday.
I would fall over backwards to own Eagle.com.au – that is an unreal name!
Nice acquisitions 🙂
I was in contact with the agency representing genius.com.au in February. I thought the pricing was too high for a wholesale buy, so I passed. Given your negotiation expertise, I’m sure you knocked them down to a far more palatable price 😉
Nice domains. You’re a genius Ned.
Jeff
Hey Ned
Don’t you need to be a genius to get that trademark, be a hard one to get.
Don
@Don – Not trying for “Word” – that would be impossible. Going for “Image”. Be good to have some sort of TM.
Ned, that’s really interesting.
With the images it seems to create more value and it looks like something an ASX or multinational could use for serious brand recognition or even total rebranding.
Thanks Sean – I agree with you. Logos / images help bring a domain name to life.
Eagle is definitely brandable – financial, clothing label, drones, legal, new budget airline…IMHO, worth the investment. Congrats.
Two wonderful names. Well done Ned.
Yes, the are very good names, popular style of name in the current market (singular, brand style names).
