This morning on RN Breakfast, Fran Kelly interviewed John Swinson (the Chair of the PRP).
They discussed the potential new landscape for .au.
Have a listen. It’s 8 minutes worth.

John “.au” doesn’t have any brand recognition, it doesn’t even exist yet. People know .com.au.
You are drawing a long bow with your “u-turn”.

Hope Fran offers equal time for rebuttal. Mr Swinson makes it sound like paradise. His vision seems like anyone can get their shorter version of .au. No mention of existing registrants.
Jeff
I liked the bit about how there will be no eligibility rules for .au it’s open season for all comers. I can see the trust factor going down quickly though.
Apparently that was just disinformation: ”
Clarification: .au direct registration requirements
In his interview with Radio National on Monday 29 Jan, Policy Review Panel Chair John Swinson noted that one proposal for direct registration was that there would be no eligibility rules and that anybody could register .au. This is incorrect, and the proposal is to remove allocation rules, which means an eligible registrant could register any domain name.”
I like the IDN idea.
He makes the rest sound easy and sensible, when in reality it isn’t. It’s just cash grab 101.
Class Action Lawsuit 101
I don’t know how John can say .au says Australia for the rest of the world when .com.au does not wouldn’t .Aus say Australia better for the rest of the world if that was the case, its strange when the Uk have just gone to direct registration and we need to do the same the population of the Uk is 65 million people we have some 24 million. We all know it a money grab from Auda and the registrar’s, if they protect the currant owners of the .com.au domains and they purchase the .au as brand protection where is anyone’s benefit apart from Auda and the registrar’s. Go figure
.UK has been a disaster, apparently even the people running Nominet see the whole thing as botched.
Lol, is it a fundraiser?
Has auDA released a public press release ? Why not?

Thanks for publishing this. When I got to the PRP in the afternoon. I asked the presenter why we keep getting the same talking points from them about AU having a good brand, when it doesn’t have one. He said no one has said that. I said John Swinson said it on radio national in a Fran Kelly interview. The room started laughing. Turns out I was talking to John Swinson 🙂
We’re doing more this week on it. The business community is starting to find out about this and they are very pissed off. More news to come but there is a bunch of us leveraging our social skills 🙂 They really should have been nicer to me on Wed LOL.
Is there a recording we can listen to?
I have just been informed by John Swinson that the recordings will not be released.
